Whether you are a weekend pleasure rider or a competitive show rider, having the right equipment makes every ride safer, more comfortable, and more enjoyable. Here is a practical guide to the horse products and accessories every rider should have in their kit.

Essential Safety Equipment

Safety must always come first. Every rider should own a properly fitted riding helmet that meets current Australian safety standards (AS/NZS 3838 or equivalent). Body protectors are strongly recommended for jumping, eventing, or riding young or unpredictable horses. Boots with a low heel prevent the foot from slipping through the stirrup.

Basic Tack

Your horse’s comfort and your communication depend on well-fitted, well-maintained tack. At minimum, every horse needs a bridle and bit (or bitless option) appropriate to their training level and discipline, a saddle correctly fitted by a professional saddle fitter, a saddle pad or numnah, a girth, stirrup leathers, and irons. Invest in the best quality tack you can afford โ€” it will last longer and serve both you and your horse better.

Grooming Kit

A complete grooming kit includes a curry comb, body brush, mane and tail brush, hoof pick, sponges, and stable rubber. Regular grooming not only keeps your horse clean and comfortable but also provides an opportunity to check for any lumps, cuts, or changes in condition that might indicate a health issue.

Stable Supplies

If your horse is stabled, you will need buckets for water and feed, a hay net or rack, stable rugs appropriate for the season, and leg wraps or boots for protection. Good stable management is fundamental to horse health.

Horse Rugs

Australian weather can be unpredictable. A basic set of rugs typically includes a lightweight summer sheet (for fly protection), a mid-weight combo rug for cooler days, and a heavy winter rug for cold nights. Waterproof outer shells are essential for paddocked horses during rain.
