Training a pet is like training a newborn child. It looks difficult in the beginning, but when you start training them, everything becomes easier โ€” and a lot more fun. These games are some of the best ways to teach your dog manners, improve their physical strength, and strengthen the bond between you and your furry companion.

Tug of War

Do not get surprised โ€” tug of war is one of the best games you can play with your pet. It is an amazing way to teach some manners to your dog and also helps with improving their physical strength. Playing this game with your pet is a bit different from how you might play it with a human opponent. You should continue playing the game unless the dog’s teeth touch your skin. After a few sessions, the pet will understand the boundaries of this game and they will love playing it with you.

Frisbee

One of the most classic games people play with their pets. It is a great way to boost your dog’s natural drive to chase. You can simply start with a soft disc if your pet is not yet familiar with how to catch a Frisbee. Over time, they will become remarkably accurate at tracking and catching it in mid-air.

Swimming

Pets can become really good swimmers, but you need to provide them with proper training so they build confidence and safety in the water. Start with shallow water โ€” a paddling pool or gentle stream โ€” and always supervise closely. Many dogs absolutely love water once they feel comfortable in it.

Hide and Seek

This game is fantastic for developing your dog’s recall skills. Have someone hold your dog while you hide, then call them. When they find you, reward them enthusiastically. This reinforces the critical behaviour of coming when called โ€” one of the most important skills a dog can have.

Obstacle Courses

Set up a simple obstacle course in your backyard or garden using household items. Tunnels made from chairs and blankets, low jumps from broomsticks, weave poles from garden stakes โ€” the possibilities are endless. This type of activity stimulates your dog’s mind and body simultaneously, and most dogs absolutely thrive on it.

Shell Game

Hide a treat under one of three cups and shuffle them around. Let your dog use their nose to find the treat. This game leverages one of the dog’s greatest superpowers โ€” their extraordinary sense of smell โ€” and is excellent mental exercise for dogs of all ages.

Start with short, positive training sessions and always end on a success. Consistency and patience are the keys to a well-trained, happy dog. Need more guidance? Contact the Pooch Mag training team.
