Caring for Your Dog During Winter

Winter weather complicates things for domestic animals like dogs who are not meant to face the cold all on their own. Whether you are in Melbourne or regional Victoria, the cooler months bring real challenges for your canine companion — and real opportunities to show extra love and care.

Keep Them Warm Indoors

The first priority is ensuring your dog has a warm, comfortable place to rest. A quality dog bed with insulation and cushioning makes an enormous difference. Place the bed away from draughts, off cold floors where possible, and in a spot your dog already gravitates to. Look for beds with memory foam or orthopaedic fill — these are especially beneficial for older dogs or breeds prone to joint issues.

Watch for Signs of Cold Stress

Unlike humans, dogs cannot tell you when they are too cold. Watch for signs including shivering, curling up tightly, reluctance to go outside, cold ears, or seeking warmth on or near you. Small breeds, short-haired dogs, puppies, and senior dogs are all more vulnerable to cold than healthy adult dogs with thick coats.

Adjust Their Diet

Dogs typically burn more calories in cold weather to maintain their body temperature, particularly if they spend time outdoors. Check with your vet about whether a slight increase in food quantity is appropriate for your dog during the colder months. Always ensure fresh water is available and has not frozen overnight.

Winter Exercise

Do not skip exercise in winter — but adapt it. Early mornings and evenings can be very cold, so consider midday walks instead. Shorter, more frequent walks are better than long exposure in extreme cold. For very cold or wet days, indoor enrichment games (like the training games in our other articles) are a great substitute for physical exercise.

Paw Care

Cold and damp conditions can cause cracking and discomfort to your dog’s paw pads. Rinse paws after wet walks to remove any salt or debris, and consider a paw balm or protective wax to prevent drying and cracking.

Vet Check

Winter is a good time for a general vet check, particularly to assess joint health in older dogs, as arthritis and stiffness are often aggravated by cold weather. Our team can assist with referrals and advice. Get in touch.
