Bringing a new puppy home is one of the most exciting things a dog lover can experience โ€” and one of the most overwhelming. Being prepared before your puppy arrives makes the transition smoother for everyone, including your new furry family member. Here is the essential checklist.

Before Puppy Arrives

  • Dog bed โ€” choose an appropriately sized, comfortable bed and place it in a warm, quiet location
  • Crate โ€” optional but highly recommended for toilet training and giving your puppy a safe den space
  • Food and water bowls โ€” stainless steel or ceramic are more hygienic than plastic
  • Puppy food โ€” ask your breeder or rescue organisation what your puppy has been eating and continue that diet initially
  • Collar and ID tag โ€” your puppy must be microchipped and registered in Victoria before 3 months of age
  • Lead โ€” a flat, adjustable collar lead to start, 1.2โ€“1.8m long
  • Puppy pads or outdoor toilet area โ€” decide on your toilet training approach in advance

The First 48 Hours

The first two days in a new home can be overwhelming for a puppy. Keep the environment calm and quiet. Limit visitors initially. Allow your puppy to explore at their own pace, and make sure they have access to a safe retreat (their crate or bed) whenever they need it.

Vet Registration

Register with a local vet within the first week and schedule an initial health check. Your vet will advise on vaccination schedules, worming, flea prevention, and microchipping if not already done.

Puppy Classes

Book your puppy into a reputable puppy class as soon as they have completed their initial vaccinations (usually around 12-14 weeks). The socialisation and basic training at this stage is invaluable. Contact Pooch Mag for details on our puppy classes.
